US House of Representatives Approved Health Care Reform Bill
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. health care system, with majority Democrats handing President Barack Obama a victory on his top domestic priority.
The House approved a Senate-passed health care bill on March 21, 2010 (Sunday) by a vote of 219 to 212. Minority Republicans were unanimous in opposition, and 34 Democrats joined them in voting no. Two-hundred-sixteen votes were needed for passage.
“Dr. Steven Chu is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who has been working at the cutting edge of our nation’s effort to develop new and cleaner forms of energy. He blazed new trails as a scientist, teacher, and administrator, and has recently led the Berkeley National Laboratory in pursuit of new
alternative and renewable energies. Steven is uniquely suited to be our next Secretary of Energy as we make this pursuit a guiding purpose of the Department of Energy, as well as a national mission. The scientists at our national labs will have a distinguished peer at the helm. His appointment
should send a signal to all that my Administration will value science, we will make decisions based on the facts, and we understand that the facts demand bold action.”
President Obama speaks about moving forward to create jobs, out-compete in the global economy by investing in innovation and education, and win the future for our children and our country. January 25, 2010.
U.S. President Barack Obama delivered his first State of the Union Address to Congress and the American people Wednesday, 27 January, 2010.
It’s been a tumultuous first year for the president facing slow economic recovery, battles over health care reform and more recently, the Republican Senate victory in Massachusetts, which has changed the balance of power in the Senate, endangering the president’s agenda.
However, in his hour-long speech before both houses of Congress, President Obama urged Americans to overcome a deficit of trust in government and work together to solve a damaged economy and other problems. The economy was high on the president’s list of priorities in his annual State of the Union address Wednesday night.
President Obama spoke about restoring security for middle class families after a lost decade of declining wages, eroding retirement security and escalating health care and tuition costs.
Among the president’s economic goals are doubling U.S. exports in five years and freezing most domestic government spending for three years, starting in 2011.
President Obama must postpone his planned visits to Indonesia and Australia for a later date (original plan is in March 2010) so he can remain in Washington for passage of health insurance reform.
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, the third largest democracy; is home to the largest Muslim population in the world; and an important partner in the G20. President Obama greatly regrets the delay of his visits. U.S. international alliances are critical to America’s security and economic progress.
During his visit President Obama will formally launch the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership, an initiative through which the United States will broaden and strengthen relations with Indonesia to tackle important regional and global issues.
Indonesia is a country that the President has personal experience in, having lived there for four years as a child; having a sister who’s half Indonesian; and his mother of course worked extensively in Indonesia for 20 years. So he will be able to speak to his connections to the country.
The President will continue on to Australia following the visit to Indonesia.
